ELLIS ISLAND
In June of 2026, I was able to explore the abandoned hospital on the south side of Ellis Island thanks to Save Ellis Island, a National Park Service partner for the restoration and preservation of the 29 unrestored buildings on Ellis Island’s south side. These buildings once formed a state-of-the-art medical facility where more than 1.2 million immigrants were treated before being admitted to the US. Walking through the buildings, I couldn't help but think about all those who passed through here carrying hope, fear, uncertainty, and dreams of a new life.
Preservation work isn't just about saving old buildings. It's about ensuring that places like this continue to tell their stories for future generations. I'm grateful for the chance to experience this remarkable place firsthand and for all Save Ellis Island is doing to preserve these buildings and the stories they hold.
